As many are now aware, while defending the Senate’s bipartisan Immigration Reform bill, President Bush expressed an extraordinary assumption. He denounced those opposing immediate legal status for 12 million non-documented aliens as folks not wanting what’s best for America.

On May 29th, multiple news outlets like USA Today quoted Bush saying, “Some people’s solution to illegal immigration is ‘kick ‘em out.’ That is simply unrealistic. That won’t work.”

CLOSE THE DOOR - Americans want the border sealed

In successive polls over the last two years, 65 percent to 70 percent of Americans have insisted that all immigration reform accommodations be unambiguously contingent upon substantively sealing the border.

Despite these now abundantly familiar results, our national leaders recently launched a bipartisan effort to comply with their moneyed constituents over their voting constituents and have sculptured a deal to grant temporary legal status to most non-documented residents in the United States.

A CHANCE TO PUT UP OR SHUT UP ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

How might the problems surrounding non-documented aliens be handled if they were bartered by two hard-nosed horse-traders, one favoring comprehensive immigration reform and the other wanting to enforce existing laws? Imagine the law-enforcement-guy becoming especially daring and saying to his counterpart, “Your team can have the pathways to citizenship and guest worker programs, providing we first get the sealed border.”

I’m afraid immigration-reform-guy would still reject the deal because lost to his crowd would be their most treasured possession - the ongoing, ill-monitored and ill-protected border that feeds the avarice of corporate rightists wanting cheap labor, and socialist leftists wanting votes.

THE MEDIA RESPECTS CITIZENS LESS THAN ILLEGALS

With the possible exception of HMO’s, the media seems to be the only industry we can’t hold legally accountable for negligent service after purchase.

On March 4th, The Washington Post’s Editorial Board had a piece entitled “Immigration Reform, Take 2,” in which the oldest parlor game was played – subjecting readers to a skewed standard that allows the illegitimate to appear credible.

The article rightfully argues for countering illegal immigration through guest worker programs and pathways to citizenship, but does so by endorsing legislation that sweepingly ignores existing constitutional law requiring the government first to protect us from invasion, hence the false gauge.
